November 25, 2012: Native American Literature and Documentary

Louise Erdrich, Native American novelist and Dartmouth ’76, recently won the National Book Award for her book The Round House. This week, we bring you a rebroadcast of our 2011 interview with the author. She tells us about her beginnings as a writer, the importance of storytelling in Native American culture, and the social impact she hopes her writing will have.

Alanis Obomsawin is a documentary filmmaker whose work focuses on social injustice and Native American culture. Her film Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance chronicles an explosive land dispute between the town of Oka, Quebec and the local Native American population. She describes what it was like to be in the middle of that confrontation.
