March 13, 2011: College Alternatives

Is a traditional college degree necessary for success?  Or is it possible to pursue a more personalized, self-directed route to higher education?  Can you “homeschool” through college?

Liz talks with Anya Kamenetz, author of DIY U: Edupunks, Edupreneurs and the Coming Transformation of Higher Education, about what she sees as the insupportable demands that are being placed on our university system.  Anya tells us how the world of higher education is changing to accommodate self-motivated learners.  To find out more about her book, click here.

Also joining us is Dale Stephens, who collaborated with Dartmouth student Rebecca Goldman to found, a website that helps students create their own higher education plan, built around a core set of required projects — such as writing a “bucket list,” volunteering for 200+ hours, and teaching yourself courses that you design.  Dale talks about the benefits of being an “unstudent” whose classroom is the real world.
